Course Overview

Many polytechnic diploma holders who pursue university degrees in Engineering or Science often find university Mathematics challenging. The University Preparatory Programme (UPP) in Mathematics was designed to ease these students into university Mathematics. However, if you have little or no background in Calculus, or wish to have a refresher course, this Foundation Mathematics course will strengthen your foundation for the UPP in Mathematics. This course will focus on the following Mathematics topics: Algebra, Functions, Matrices, Trigonometry, Differentiation and Integration.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course should have passed GCE O-Level Mathematics (Syllabus 4016).

What You'll Learn

Algebraic Techniques in Solving Polynomial, Exponential, and Logarithmic Equations
Introduction to Functions and Graphs
Introduction to Matrices
Introduction to Trigonometric Functions and Equations
Calculus of Single-variable Functions

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

Solve polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic equations;
Identify the domain, range, and graph of elementary functions;
Calculate the composition and inverse of functions;
Calculate the addition, multiplication, and inverse of matrices;
Identify trigonometric functions and graphs;
Solve trigonometric equations;
Calculate derivatives of a function;
Calculate integrals.

Certification

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance and passed the assessment will be awarded a Certificate in Foundation Mathematics.

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance but did not pass the assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.

Goh Toh Hong

B.Sc. (UOL)

Toh Hung taught all the 3 modules of full time Mathematics modules in Temasek Polytechnic, He held managerial positions in a large MNC as well as in a local SME, running high volume production line/engineering, including assigned outstation stints for a couple of years. Toh Hung has great passion and interest in education. Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, he accumulated vast experience in the education environment having taught for a number of years at private educational organisations Temasek Polytechnic in 2010.

Joey Neo

Joey has been involved in mathematics education since 2011. She is well versed in the O and A levels national mathematics subjects. Besides teaching, she is also experienced in financial advisory. Presently, Joey is dedicating her teaching passion to lecture Mathematics and Logical Thinking at the Centre for Foundation Studies, Temasek Polytechnic, since 2018.

Lok Swee Wah

Swee Wah has more than 25 years of teaching experience. He has taught various subjects at the Singapore Polytechnic for 9 years prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic. Apart from teaching at the Polytechnic, he has conducted numerous workshops for Primary, Secondary Schools, and Junior Colleges. He has also acted as a consultant for Yakult (S) Pte Ltd from 1986 to 1993. Swee Wah has been teaching Engineering Mathematics at the School of Engineering, Temasek Polytechnic, since 2000.
