Course Overview

Many polytechnic diploma holders who pursue university degrees in Engineering or Science often find university Mathematics challenging. This is a specialised University Preparatory Programme (UPP) in Mathematics course designed to bridge the gap between polytechnic- and university-level Mathematics. It will focus on intermediate Calculus and covers topics such as Numerical Methods, Improper Integrals, Infinite Series, Vectors, Partial Differentiation, Multiple Integrals, and Ordinary Differential Equations.

There are exemptions available for participants. Please check course details for more information. 

Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course should have passed any one of the following:

 

  • GCE O-Level Additional Mathematics (Syllabus 4047); or
  • Engineering Mathematics or Calculus from local polytechnics (TP Subjects: EMA1002, AMA2001, BLO1002); or
  • UPP Foundation Mathematics

What You'll Learn

  • Numerical methods in approximation
  • Techniques in Calculating Improper Integrals
  • Convergence of Infinite Series
  • Introduction to 3D Vectors and Quadric Surfaces
  • Calculus of Multi-variable Functions
  • Techniques in Solving Ordinary Differential Equations

 

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Approximate solution of calculus problems using simple numerical methods;
  • Calculate improper integrals using limit techniques;
  • Determine the convergence of an infinite series;
  • Construct line and plane equations in 3D space;
  • Measure distances in 3D space using vectors;
  • Identify quadric surfaces and their equations;
  • Calculate partial derivatives of a multi-variable function;
  • Calculate multiple integrals;
  • Solve Ordinary Differential Equations.

 

 

Certification

 

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance and passed the assessment will be awarded a Certificate in Mathematics.
 

Participants who meet the 75% minimum attendance but did not pass the assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
