Engineering Innovation Challenge
Demonstrating their innovative spirit and ability to apply what they have learnt, Biomedical Engineering students won a Silver award (and $100 seed funding) in the national Engineering Innovation Challenge 2004.
Their project, “Enhancing Natural Anti-microbial Properties of Food Packaging”, uses Nisin, an FDA-approved natural peptide to coat the interior of food packagings via a unique process, replacing the need for harmful chemical preservatives.

The Doctor is in!
Joshua Teo Han Wei who graduated from the Diploma in Biomedical Engineering (Merit) in 2012, achieved a first when he was admitted to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS in 2014. After a long journey, he finally fulfilled his childhood dream to be a medical doctor, obtaining his MBBS in 2019 -- becoming the first Engineering student from TP to do so.
Now a General Practitioner in a private medical group, the energetic doctor recalled his days in TP: “I am grateful to my diploma for giving me the basic engineering skill sets and research techniques, that have helped me to achieve my dream,” he said.

ARTSIC
Three Biomedical Engineering students invented a unique Anti-Snoring Oral Device, achieving a Merit Award as well as Best Poster award in annual Assistive & Rehabilitation Technologies Student Innovation Challenge (ARTSIC) 2021.
The device is inserted into a patient’s mouth during sleep, so as to prevent the tongue from sliding backwards into the throat, thereby eliminating snoring.

Green Wave Environmental Care Competition
Biomedical Engineering students won a Silver award in the Green Wave Environmental Care Competition 2021, for inventing an “Eco-Soap” – a small step that saves cost, but a giant leap for sustainability. Their soap is made from used cooking oil (UCO) which is pre-treated to remove its impurities and then upcycled to produce skin-safe, eco-friendly soaps.
