Course Overview

This course aims to equip participants with the intermediate skill sets of analytical, preparative and interpretative skills that are critical to those working in a laboratory which is mapped to laboratory technician job roles with reference to the Energy & Chemicals Skills framework.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum N level/ITE/Relevant Diploma
  • Complete Basic course as a pre-requisite for N-level or ITE holders
  • Participants are required to bring their own laptop with pre-installed Microsoft Excel

Day 1

  • SAC-SINGLAS – ISO 15189 Standard Overview
  • Reagent and Reference Materials
  • Test Methods & Method Validations
  • Hands-on: Quality Control & Proficiency Testing (UV Spectrophotometer test of unknown sample)
  • Uncertainty Measurement

Written Assessment (Open Book) – Consist of MCQ and Short Answer Questions

 

Day 2

  • Introduction to Quality Control in the Lab
  • Quality Assurance
    • o Types of Quality Assurance - Internal Quality Control, External Quality Assurance
    • o Importance of Quality Assurance
    • o Interpreting QA reports
    • o Practical
  • Immunology Testing
    • o Introduction to Allergy Testing 
    • o Principle behind the test
    • o Performing allergy test (Immunoblot Process)
    • o Practical
    • o Introduction to Immunoblot Allergy Machine
    • o Reading of sample results
    • o Cleaning of machine
    • o Troubleshooting

Written Assessment (Open Book) – Consist of MCQ and Short Answer Questions

 

Day 3

  • Introduction to Breath Testing
  • Hydrogen Breath Testing
    • Introduction to HBT machine, patient preparation guidelines
    • Operational Maintenance of HBT machine, E.g. item check, internal calibration, linearity test, Flow rate check. Running of test
    • Cleaning of machine
    • Replacement of parts (as per PM)
    • Other checks including desiccant and sample drying tube
    • Electric safety check and Troubleshooting
    • Protocol of hydrogen/methane gas test
    • Analysing patient sample
    • Understanding test results
  • Introduction to Serology
    • Types of Serology Testing
    • Introduction to Rapid Test
    • Principles behind test
    • Performing of rapid test for H. pylori

Written Assessment (Open Book) – Consist of MCQ and Short Answer Questions

 

Day 4

  • Introduction to Haematology
  • Haematology Testing
    • Introduction to Manual staining 
    • Principles behind staining
    • Performing of manual staining
  • Introduction to Automated Staining
    • Introduction to Automated Stainer
    • Interpretation of Results
    • Using of machine, reading of results, principle behind machine
    • Other checks including pattern spray check, system flush
    • Electric safety check
    • Troubleshooting

Written Assessment (Open Book) – Consist of MCQ and Short Answer Questions

 

 

Certification

 

Participants will be issued with a Certificate of Accomplishment upon meeting 75% of the required course attendance and passed the assessments.
