Green Practices by Temasek Polytechnic
Climate change and global warming is a critical challenge faced by everyone, affecting particularly the young and the next generation. As a tertiary institution preparing the young people for the future, everyone in TP has a responsibility to leave a better world for the students.
As part of the “Sustainability Journey”, TP has invested substantially to upgrade our hardware to improve energy efficiency and conserve water. We have achieved tremendous savings in energy and water consumption. However, to bring us to the next level, we need to change our mindset and adopt a set of sustainable behaviors. This Green Practices underlines TP’s continual endeavor to promote and improve environmental sustainability in our operations and nurture responsible behaviors.
We hope every stakeholder in TP will adopt the green practices in their daily lifestyle both in TP and at home.
ENERGY CONSERVATION
General
- Take the staircase instead of elevators
- Remember to switch off lights and other electricity-consuming equipment, when not in use
- Unplug electronic devices when they are fully charged
- Use natural light instead of artificial lighting when possible
- Carpool where possible, or use public transport or cycle to work
- Opt for teleconferencing or video-conferencing to minimize unnecessary travelling for meetings
Computers & Office Equipment
- Always switch off your PC and monitor at the end of the day before you leave your workplace, it is also a fire hazard to leave equipment power on unattended
- Program your computer to energy-saving mode when not in use for an extended period of time
- Change the printer's settings to economy mode and avoid printing in colour if possible. For 3 copies or less, use the printer; for more copies, use the copier
- Using the "stand-by" button on copier will lighten energy load by 70%. Switch off the printer at the end of the day

Air-Conditioning
- Set air-condition space temperature at 25 °C or higher in accordance with GreenGov.sg guideline
- Think of the environment before you request for aircon. Do not “over” request for aircon prior to or after an event. Request only for the actual setup and event duration to avoid wastage. If the event end earlier, please call EFM Helpdesk at 6780 5955 to turn off the aircon and lights
- Doors and windows should be closed at all times in air-conditioned area
WATER CONSERVATION
- Use the lowest pressure necessary each time you turn on a water faucet. Keep the water turned on only while it is needed
- Report any faulty tap or flush to maintenance team using Campus Insight

WASTE REDUCTION
- Use both sides of every sheet of paper, wherever possible
- Share / Circulate documents instead of photocopying personal copies
- Minimize printing hard copies of draft documents. Vet the draft documents electronically
- BYOB to reduce single use plastic. Do not use straw
- Use reusable bags when shopping
RECYCLING
E-Waste, Shoe & Textile Recycling
- There are recycling bins located at various locations in TP. Make full use of them
- Segregate recyclable wastes (Paper, plastic & metal cans) and deposit them in the correct recycling bins
- Besides general recycling bins, e-waste, textile and shoe recycling bins are located at Main Foyer, Lobby C Plaza Concourse and Block 14 Concourse

What to Recycle
- The label on the blue recycling bins has been designed to make information clearer on what can and cannot be deposited in the bins
- To check if your item can or cannot be recycled, simply use the Recycling Search Engine or check out Bloobin's Recycling Guide to seek his advice. He may also throw in a few helpful recycling tips!

Food Waste Recycling
- Canteens at ENG, BUS and DES schools are equipped with food waste digester
- Food wastes are converted to greywater thereby reducing burden on incinerator and landfill

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
- Walk or cycle to school
- Use public transport or carpooling to school
- Choose electric or hybrid vehicle. EV chargers are installed at ENG school carparks. More chargers will be installed progressively
